Grade B Maple Syrup

Our Organic Grade B Maple Syrup is sourced 100% from small family farms in southwestern Wisconsin. A variety of species of hardwood trees, including our maple trees, grow on the steep hillsides of the Ocooch Mountains that surround the beautiful Kickapoo River Valley. These natural forests in Wisconsin are a healthy mix of many species of  trees, unlike huge commercial maple plantations that are often planted in former wheat fields. Great care is taken in harvesting the sap to make the Maple Syrup, ensuring that the heath of the tree is not compromised.

What is Certified Organic Maple Syrup?

There is a difference between organic maple syrup and non-organic maple syrup. For years health conscious consumers have seen the word “Pure” associated with maple syrup and assumed the best. Many conventional maple farmers can practice organic stewardship, but Organic certification guarantees the following:

No pesticides or chemicals were used to manage this forest. Like any crop, a forest can be and is sprayed for insect problems or have unwanted trees that can be and are killed by chemicals. The same organic standards for field crops apply to maple forest, i.e., buffer zones, runoff, no fertilizers etc. Organic certification assures no pesticides/chemicals were used.

A healthy forest. Organic standards limit the number of taps in maple trees. This practice sustains the health of the tree. Conventional methods can use as many taps as desired. Organic certification guarantees a holistic approach to maple production.

What is Grade B Maple Syrup?

Maple syrup in the United States is graded by color, as either Grade A or Grade B. Grade A is a lighter color then Grade B, and is made from the first sap tapped from the maple tree. Grade B is darker in color, and made from the last stages of the sap tapped from the maple tree.

Research was done in Wisconsin by a University of Wisconsin graduate student which showed Grade B maple syrup had a higher mineral content than Grade A. Currently, Tropical Traditions only sells Organic Grade B Maple Syrup.

Our Organic Grade B Maple Syrup is 100% sourced from small-scale family farmers in southwestern Wisconsin, and is NOT mixed with cheaper Canadian maple syrup.
